What I liked

I attended Helston hospital MIU after receiving an eye injury, after checking online what time they closed I set out and arrived there at 7.45pm only to find the place empty and a nurse who told me they had all gone home the MIU was supposed to close at 8pm!

So after having to get my neighbour at short notice to drive me to Camborne/Redruth hospital where I received the best possible care and would highly recommend the hospital.

The fact that I am NHS staff made me ashamed and just confirmed all the complaints and bad press that the NHS receives and in this instance I found it hard to defend.

What could be improved

MIU staff not going home early!

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a comment regarding Helston Minor Injury Unit on NHS Choices. As stated on the Helston hospital page, the MIU should be open from 8am to 8pm and we apologise for the inconvenience caused by the unit being shut on the evening you attended.

The unit is run by specially trained staff, and at times of sickness for example, if these staff are not available, then the unit has to be closed. This information is always passed onto Serco, the out of hours service, as well as NHS Direct. Usually, signage at the unit will also advise patients of the unavailability of services and who to contact.

Without knowing the exact date of your attendance at Helston, we cannot look more closely at the circumstances regarding staffing on the MIU that evening.
