"GTT test confusion, stress and mess up"

About: Hillingdon Hospital / Maternity

I am 36 weeks pregnant and I did my GTT test at Hillingdon Hospital over two weeks ago. I was told the results would be out in a couple of days, and so several days later I recieve a voicemail from my midwife regarding my blood results saying that my GTT results came back fine but that I had a slight iron deficiency. This was great news, and I have been carrying on with my life and diet as normal.

I recieved a call today from Hillingdon Hospital telling me that my GTT results were inconclusive and that I had to redo the test. The person on the phone was a little rude and would not elaborate when I asked them why my midwife told me otherwise and what my results actually were. I pushed back and finally they told me there was a problem with then Lucazade from the day I did the test and that the calculation they carried out was wrong and that everyone from that day has to redo the test. I don't even believe this answer as it took a while to get it out of them. Also what can the problem with the lucazade be?

This is a very tiring and difficult test (involves fasting for 12 hours and two blood tests in one morning), I am disappointed that it has been handled in this way. While my midwives so far have been amazing, this aspect of Hillingdon Hospital has been a source of stress for me and I am actually considering changing hospitals this late in my pregnancy. The bureaucracy, the very very long waiting time just to get to talk to someone on the phone, the total insensitivity do not make me feel safe or secure ahead of my labour at this hospital.

I apologise for how this was handled but due to the urgency of the matter we needed to get in touch with you as soon as possible to have a repeated test. I again apologise for the lack of information and explanation given to you over the phone.

We have used Lucozade for many years to complete the GTT test as a measured amount gave the amount of glucose needed to for this test. Unfortunately we were unaware that the sugar content had changed (less glucose per serving) in the stock we received from the company the week you were tested. To be sure that we have an accurate test result we need to retest all the women who had their GTT taken during that week. As a service we are aware of the difficulty in having this test taken during pregnancy, especially when pregnancy is so advanced.

I’m indeed sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you however, it is imperative that we get an accurate result so that your pregnancy can be managed appropriately.

I’m delighted to know that our midwives have been amazing so far, which I’m sure they will continue to be during the rest of your pregnancy, delivery and postnatal period.

If you wish to contact me regarding this please do.
