(as a parent/guardian),

I'm concerned about the lack of infection control in this ward.

My son was in the ward suffering from a chest infection and was in a single room.

There were signs on other single rooms to note the child was in isolation.

Nurses went from room to room and patient to patient to do checks without any hand washing or gloves worn.

Doors were often kept open in these rooms and at times children from these rooms were playing in the hallway.

Hi worried mum, I would like to echo what Emma has said in relation to how seriously that we take infection control measures and would also like the opportunity to discuss further.

I am sorry that this is what you experienced and will share your comments with staff.

we are currently revising our information leaflets in relation to infection control and what it means to a family if their child is in isolation.

Unfortunately despite us asking families to keep children in their rooms when in isolation, we are often ignored.

We regularly undertake audits to ensure that our infection control measures are being adhered to and I have been, in the past quite positive to know that our results are generally very good, however, your comments does not reflect this. I would also like to point out that we are not required to wear gloves unless we are dealing with body fluids and when staff are going in and out of the rooms they should be using the hand gel which is dispensed outside every room. There is no need to wash hands in the room every time you enter a room as long as you use the 5 key moments of hand hygiene when entering or leaving a room. However, this does not detract in any way that you have experienced what would appear to be poor compliance from staff in relation to this and I will ensure that staff are informed of this.

I will ensure that we continue to work with staff and families to ensure that they comply with the standard infection control measure's.

I hope that your son has made a good recovery and would hope that you will have the confidence to know that if you are in the ward with your son again, staff will be using appropriate infection control measures should they be required and also if you have any additional concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
