"Plastics team & F1 ward are amazing"

About: Wythenshawe Hospital / Plastic surgery

I was booked in to have a mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction at the beginning of April due to a very recent cancer diagnosis. Other than having children I've little experience in hospitals and was extremely scared of the whole process (operation & staying in) all i can say is wow.

Every member of staff from porters to catering to cleaners to nurses and clinicians were so friendly and helpful, they all helped put me at ease.

The ward was lovely , clean & bright and the staff were amazing, friendly & cheerful.

The fact there is a little 4 bed ward where they put the DIEP ladies together was brilliant. It's such a big op and it meant we could support each other during recovery as there was always someone further into recovery able to support those just back from theatre.

There is a real care & pride taken in looking after DIEP reconstruction ladies (I'm sure it's the same with the rest of the ward but I can only comment on what i experienced) my consultant and their second in command came to see me every day (sometimes twice a day) to check on progress and answer any questions I or my husband had.

They are both wonderful and made me feel so safe & secure.

They are extremely down to earth and friendly (& had a good sense of humour too which was refreshing too as its a scary time & i definitely use humour to cope) you can tell they are intent on providing the best possible result for their patients anf that it matters to them.

All the way throigh this process i have felt like a person not a patient or a number and i will be eternally grateful to everyone who has helped me with this difficilt time.

When I recently saw my Consultant in Dressings clinic (when they've popped into check all was healling well) I was able to tell them I'd been given the all clear the way before, they were genuinely so happy for me.

I would absolutely recommend this whole team to any of my family and friends and was worth the extra commute from my home in Buty.

Thank you does not come close to covering how I feel about my whole experience

Dear Ms Colligan

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on the NHS Choices Website.

Your comments have been forwarded to the staff in the Plastic Surgery and Sodexo, who I know are always appreciative when a patient or relative takes the time to let us know about their positive experience.

Thank you

Patient Experience Team
