"Induction after "waters" breaking"

About: Frimley Park Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

At 7pm on Monday evening I went to the toilet but wasn't sure I pushed to urinate felt like more of a trickle. Therefore I put a pad on. At 9pm I felt a gush it reached my thighs then stopped. I was confused as with my first pregnancy it was more like the Niagra Falls!

I had phoned triage prior to this as I was getting tightening pains. Once I thought my waters had potentially broken I made may way over to the hospital.

I arrived at the labour triage ward at 10pm after only booking that morning due to my husband's job change. Gave birth to my daughter at Royal Berks Reading.

I was there for 2 hours before seen as all beds were taken up. The mulberry centre was closed. Therefore they had to open up extra rooms. I presumed I'd have an internal like I did with my daughter.

The lady refused to check me internally said "you don't look like you are in labour..."

I said well can you check if my waters have broken please....she said if I check you now open to risk of infection and would have to induce you. I was happy with that however they didn't have the beds to do so. I was sent home at 1. 30am with the plan to come back at 8am for an induction.

Arrived at 8am cannula fitted around 9am.

They were still very busy had an internal at 12pm my cervix was closed so I said how have my waters gone then. They said imagine squeezing tablet. They did a gel said they would check me in 6 hours.

I was checked at 6. 52pm and they said my cervix had opened and I was 1cm.

This was pleasing as knew things were in progress....as my cervix was now open they decided to put me on the drip of oxytocin at 7pm with the olan to check me in 6 hrs time at 1am unless I had 4 hours of solid 4 in 10 active contractions.

I had a contraction almost instantly. They were a bit sporadic. However from 9pm-1am I was having 4 in 10 mins. I decided to start using gas and air at 10. 30pm

Everyone was guessing I'd be about 8cm and ready to push which you could imagine was exciting and was maintaining the pain and thought I was almost there.

My internal at 1am showed I had gone from 1cm to 2cm which was very deflating and confusing for me.

I was adamant my waters hadn't broken the midwife said they had at this 1am check.

Being a maths tutor I thought to myself if Its 4 hours for every cm I am going to be here forever! So I reluctantly asked for pethadine. They gave me pethadine at 1. 45am

I was still complaining at this point so the consultant came to chat with me and decided to check me again at 2am which I find very strange as I had been told that more checks more risk of infection.

Anyhow I am glad the consultant did check me as I was 3 cm and my sac of waters were still there! My hind(back) waters had gone. So I had all these unnecessary contractions put into me the drip was on 7. 2mg/ml. She broke my waters and turned it down to 3. 6mg/ml.

My son arrived 3 hours later at 5. 03am

I went from 3cm to 8cm in 2hrs 45 mins

I went from 8cm to him arriving in 17 mins

I just feel if they knew my front waters hadn ot broken and had checked me like I asked I wouldn't have ordered pethadine which had a horrible effect on me felt emotional weak and paranoid. Not really frame of mind for giving birth. I also would not have been exhausted as they thought it was 32 hours from waters breaking when really was only 3 hours. I had no sleep. By time they finally discharged me after asking about 10 times I was in home in my bed and has been awake for 46 hours.

NEVER AGAIN!
