"Surgical Assessment Unit, and Leverington Ward"

About: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital / General surgery

I recently visited the SAU at short notice with an abscess. I was left waiting on a plastic chair in a corridor for 5 hours which I felt was totally unacceptable. Doctors came and went and no one made the effort to explain the situation or how long it would take. The Porter was the only one keeping me informed and sane by the end of it.

Totally different experience on Leverington ward the following day, all staff were excellent, polite and kept me up to date. Couldn't recommend Leverington ward enough.

Thank you for posting your comments about your two very different experiences when seeking treatment for your abscess. It is disappointing to hear about your initial experience, particularly as the Trust has recently instigated an ‘Abscess pathway’ which is intended to ensure that patients receive a prompt diagnosis and initial treatment and are then discharged home to return the next day to have the abscess drained. I am glad that your experience the next day was so much better and I hope that you are now well on the road to recovery. I will share your comments with the Clinical Director for Surgery so that he can look at how that initial stage of the pathway could be improved and to speak with the doctors that cover SAU so they handle the situation differently in the future and ensure that the patient is kept informed.
