"Doctors response."

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / Maternity care

I wanna make it very clear that the midwives, and all the midwifery team were superb. I was very well treated and looked after by them, and for them I am thankful.

On the other hand I was totally and utterly disappointed by the medical team.

I do appreciate the fact that it is a busy maternity and you got emergencies, but there's a system in place that doesn't work at all for any other patient. If you're not dying you're treated as if you don't matter. In every occasion I needed a doctor during the 8 days I had to stay there I had to wait for hours.

The amount of different doctors handling the same case is pathetic. I only saw the same doctor the day before I was admitted and the day I was discharged. I saw in total about 8 different doctors and every single one of them addressed the situation differently.

I had pre-eclampsia and despite their efforts it wasn't gonna get better, because as they stated many times the only cure is delivery, since I was just a couple of days from being 37 weeks pregnant I was told I would had to get induced early in the next week. What was supposed to be a 24hr monitoring turned into 4 days with one doctor coming in everyday and saying I was being induced in the next day or two and another saying I was going home with BP tablets and coming back to be induced in the next week. At no point I was asked about what I wanted. I understand it is a medical decision as they're the ones who know what's safe for me and baby, but I believe that if they had two choices my feelings and opinion about it should matter. However, I was never asked.

On the fourth day, after have done tests which I was told was crucial for them to make a decision, I waited all day to see a doctor that was always on their way, but never arrived, to tell me the results. All results were in by 17h, no doctor came to see me until 00.30h. I was then told I was being induced next morning, so I got myself prepared for the early arrival of my baby. Told my husband to come early, I had my mum coming from Brazil and had to arrange for her to be picked up at the airport since my husband would be with me. Only to be seen next morning by yet a different doctor and be told I might actually be going home. That another doctor would like to see me in person AT SOME POINT that day to make a decision. That made me and my husband extremely angry, to the point he said they had to induce me that day as we were told or we would leave for another hospital. So I got induced. After 24h of labour being very well taken care of by the MIDWIVES, I had my baby boy.

When I was moved back into the ward I was told we had to be in observation for another 24hr and should go home on the Saturday morning. Come saturday my baby gets all checked and ready to leave by 12h while I had to wait for 6 hours for a doctor to check my reflexes, a 5 min task. The doctor only came when I had already self discharged and acting as if I was wrong for being fed up. Not enough space for all my disappointment.
