"Rheumatology"

About: Torbay Hospital / Rheumatology

It would be nice to be able to say Rheumatology is as helpful and informative as other hospital departments---- if only I did not have to wait 8 months to see someone.

The NHS website and guidelines state I should be seen within 18 weeks of referral.

I waited 7 and a half months to be seen in the Respiratory Clinic, where I was seen by a very efficient consultant who ordered tests which showed they could not help me but the knowledge of a Rheumatologist was needed.

When I phoned Appointments I was greeted in a friendly manner until I questioned the 8 month wait I was quoted, when the person's tone became remarkably frosty and irritated. They repeated asked me who I wanted to speak to. In other words, go and annoy someone else, this isn't my problem.

I tried calling the Rheumatology department. Leave a voicemail, which I did. No response over a week later.

I tried calling PALS, leave a voicemail, which I did. No response several days later.

I gave up at this point and called the CCG and lodged a complaint.

If Torbay hospital cannot meet the criteria it is supposed to, have the guts to say that, don't fob would-be patients off.

We all know the NHS is broke, desperately trying to survive and overstretched. We understand that. I would have preferred someone answer my message and tell me the truth.

Apart from this experience I'm sure everyone in Rheumatology will be as pleasant and professional as other staff in Torbay Hospital. Alas, I may never get to meet them.
