"A great example of effective support and encouragement"

About: Bromley Healthcare / Physiotherapy for adults Princess Royal University Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I have advanced prostate cancer which has spread to the bones. Most treatment has been at Guys hospital.

While on Chemotherapy, I had a rare severe reaction casing total lung collapse. The local Princess Royal emergency team did a superb job bringing me back from the brink.

I had 7 weeks in hospital mostly spent flat on my back. Physio support was very limited in later weeks. I was discharged poorly prepared to an empty house as they were short of beds. I was on oxygen therapy.

Rehab support did their best but were soon withdrawn and I did recover well if slowly.

Things improved greatly with the arrival of the Community Physiotherapist - she was very positive, produced an exercise plan which was doable and was very good at reassurance, showing me I did not need to be on oxygen long term (I have been off oxy therapy for 4 weeks now. I can now walk outside for 800 yards plus on my own.

She visited yesterday for the last time - as I have now progressed far enough to be signed off. She has been very effective and very supportive through this time - a really great example of effective support and encouragement.

Thank you for your posting Alfredgreat.

It sounds like you have had a very difficult time recently and that you are recovering well now.

I am sorry to hear that you experienced a poor discharge from hospital but very pleased that our community therapist clearly has supported you well to continue to improve. It would be really lovely if you could let me know which Community Team they worked in so that I can pass on your feedback.

I hope that you have a good weekend

Kind regards

Amanda

Thank you for sharing your comments about your care.

As someone with a close relative with advanced prostate cancer, I fully understand the challenges that you are facing and taking the time to share your views is admirable and very helpful for us.

Your account reflects the difficulties that you face around discharge and inadequate support once you had returned home. It is heartening to read that things did improve for you and to hear your very postive comments about the Pysio care you received.

If you would like to talk further about any aspect of your care at PRUH, please email me at jessica.bush@nhs.net and I will put you in touch with the appropriate person.
