"Pain relief"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

I had to visit the hospital twice on April the 18th with abdominal pains. On the first occasion I was discharged as my heart was ok but I was told I had a slight infection. On returning home the pain got gradually worse until it became quite bad and this was despite my taking Paracetamol on several occasions, which had little palliative effect

In the late evening I had to call out an ambulance to take me back over to the hospital. I was given morphine on the journey which certainly helped. After the usual checks had taken been done I was given some liquid and offered 2 codeine tablets. Having heard varying tales of unpleasant after effects I only took one tablet.

After a waiting period I was examined by a doctor and during this they did something in a previously pain free which almost immediately caused me considerable discomfort. The older pain then returned ( I was given a diagnosis of having Gastritis) While waiting to be discharged I asked several times for some pain relief as it was nearly unbearable but none was forthcoming and approx 5am I was told to go home. I continued to ask for pain relief and was eventually fobbed off with 2 paracetamol. I tried to explain that these had not worked previously and were unlikely to help now that the pain was much worse, but to no avail, despite it being obvious I would have thought to trained medical practitioners that i I was in very considerable distress. I was eventually left having to try to get myself through the pain whilst in the A @ E waiting area. I several times saw staff walking past nut they just ignored me, as if i as putting it on or something.

I know the NHS does not have it's troubles to seek but surely a little bit of pain relief for someone who was obviously suffering is not too much to ask.

Fortunately I eventually I recovered enough to get a taxi home to Matlock, without being able to pick up my prescription for the Gastritis for which I will have to make a journey over again. I will do this in the middle of the day so as to hopefully avoid meeting the staff who were directly responsible for possibly the most horrendous and frightening couple of hours of my 66 years

I was really saddened to read your post about your visit to our emergency department and how you felt you were left in pain and in distress.

I am certain the staff will be equally disappointed to learn that you felt frightened and would wish to avoid meeting them again. I can understand that you felt you has to post your comments anonymously, but I hope you read my response and feel able to call our Assistance & Complaints Department – to tell them a little more about yourself and what happened during your visit.

I will share your post with the staff, but discussing your experience over the phone with one of the senior leaders for this service will help us to learn from what happened and give you an opportunity to talk about the effect this episode had on you.

You can call them with your details on 01246 512640 or you are welcome to email them to me sarah.turner-saint@nhs.net and I will pass them on for you.

I hope you are feeling a little better today?

Kind regards Sarah Turner-Saint head of communications
