"Long delay at clinic"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

My eldest  had an outpatient appointment at the paediatric haematology clinic at Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital  As we live outside Forres we had to leave home at early to drive through the morning heavy traffic & park in plenty of time for our appointment. This meant also bringing our 4 year old with us as the early departure meant he couldn't be dropped at nursery.

Arriving in the clinic at  we were seen really promptly by friendly nursing and healthcare staff however we were not seen by the Consultant (who was clearly working flat out) until much later. This can only mean that the scheduling of this clinic is not correct - for it to be running an hour and twenty minutes late so early in the morning, I feel something is going wrong.

The content of our consultation, containing no physical examination, could have easily been carried out by telephone or VC. The blood sampling by the phlebotomist could have been carried out at our local health centre.

A further two hours spent travelling home meant both sons missed a full day of school/nursery pointlessly. I'd be keen for NHSG to think about the patient pathway for patients in Moray and consider telemedicine options or perhaps patients being seen at Raigmore instead.

Hi Gibmac, I am really sorry that your experience at RACH was not a totally positive one. Unfortunately sometimes clinics overrun despite the best efforts of the staff and this certainly appears to be the case here, as the staff were clearly working very hard. However it seems in this case that something was not quite as it should be.

NHS Grampian has a responsibility to improve it's services on an ongoing basis and your suggestions are reasonable ones. I will share your feedback with our Unit Operational Manager and the Haematology Consultant and ask them to consider your suggestions.

Thanks very much for taking the time to post this feedback and for your constructive suggestions.
