My GP had referred me for a prostate biopsy to the Urology Department, via the two week pathway, in case I had cancer of the prostate.
The hospital runs a `One stop clinic', whereby tests and ultrascan (and also in my case an ECG) are all carried out on the same day.
I had a separate MRI scan one day before the One Stop Clinic.
Although my MRI scan showed no cancer, I was offered the `Rolls Royce' of prostate biopsies.
Rather than undergoing the cheaper option of entering through the rectum and risking infection and sepsis (as happened to a friend who had this procedure), I had a general anaesthetic during which time the samples were taken.
This involved an overnight stay in hospital.
On leaving the hospital, I was told the results would take about 15 days.
In fact I received my follow up appointment in a week's time, and at this consultation I saw the surgeon who had operated on me who informed me I was clear.
In summary, the series of tests and the procedure were carried out in a very quick and efficient manner.
I could not hope for better treatment.
All of the staff that I came into contact with (approximately 20 in total) during my hospital visits and stay were warm, friendly, attentive and efficient.
I have previously had an investigation and procedure carried out under private health care and this was as good, if not better, than that treatment.
