"I am amazed how my attitude has changed"

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / HARP (Heart and Respiratory Patients)

(as a volunteer/advocate),

I had the opportunity to attend the HARP classes run by Ayrshire and Arran health board. As a person who was totally a stranger to exercise, I am amazed how the encouragement and help given by the staff has changed my attitude to getting fit. It is so reassuring to know that staff are there to assess you and can gauge when you are ready to progress to the next stage. Although not a prime reason for the classes, it is good to meet others who, like yourself, are taking advantage of this service. After the ten week block, you are given advice on local classes which would suit your needs. I am now a volunteer at the class.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Freava brown,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this lovely story and well done for volunteering. We always need people to help. There was me thinking you were going to talk music and take part in concerts at the Royal Concert Hall. For those of you (like me) who did not know what HARP is and may be interested to participate-

It is our Healthy and Active Rehabilitation Programme (HARP). It has been designed for people who are affected by more than one long-term condition. Having more than one long-term condition can impact upon a person and their family physically, socially and psychologically. The Healthy and Active Rehabilitation Programme provides education, advice and support so that patients can achieve and maintain the best possible physical and psychological health.

What should you expect?

The Healthy and Active Rehabilitation Programme will provide a multidisciplinary assessment from a nurse and a physiotherapist who specialise in supporting lifestyle change and self-management. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk about any concerns you may have regarding your condition. You will be encouraged to set your own goals and will be offered a range of services that are appropriate to your needs to help you achieve this. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes as an assessment of your fitness may take place.

What can the Healthy and Active Rehabilitation Programme offer you?

Education to help understand more about your conditions Psychological support Self-management advice Dietary advice and weight management Smoking cessation Supervised group exercise sessions Home-based exercise programmes Referral to leisure services
