"The staff went above and beyond for me"

About: Western General Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I was finally taken in for a cystoscopy, hydrodistention and urethral dilatation after having waited for six months. I was very nervous and worried because this was my second time (due to the previous consultant not doing a more detailed report. The last time I woke up in severe pain and was extremely uncomfortable. I told the nurse this who was signing me in and taking details called Fiona. She told to me tell the consultant and anaesthetist about this to ensure I woke up more comfortable this time. Each nurse, consultant, doctor, etc. I spoke to make me feel very comfortable and safe. Even when waiting for the procedure, the cleaners and guys who moved patients from different departments (can't remember the name) were all really nice. I was asked on many occasions if I was ok which made me feel much more relaxed and taken care of.

The guys in the anaesthetic room were fantastic. I started getting really nervous and they made me laugh and giggle and kept me talking until I was knocked out.

Afterwards in recovery, my assigned nurse Fiona was very attentive and helpful. Nothing I asked for was too much trouble. When I needed assistance from other nurses, it was the same; nothing was too much trouble.

I want to make it known that my nurse Fiona went above and beyond with me. The head nurse (Jackie, I think her name was) let me use their phone to call my mum to tell her I was awake and ok and not as sore as I was last time. I even asked my mum to buy a card and chocolates for the nurses because of their excellent care of me.

I'd also like to thank the student nurse who was in that evening too. I think her name was Laura...? I had to sheepishly ask her to help me put on my bra due to the needle in my hand. She didn't hesitate and said it was no bother at all and helped me with a smile. Because of her calm and happy attitude, I didn't feel shy or ashamed to ask that of her which again, made me feel so much more comfortable.

I cannot thank the staff who helped me throughout the process enough. I want them to know that I still look back at that and smile - I thought it was going to be another crappy experience and something I didn't want to remember but I can and tell many people about it because of how I was treated and cared for.

Please make sure those who I have mentioned; Fiona, Jackie, and Laura (if their names are correct) get my thanks again. I did thank them when I left but I want to make it publicly known of their help and compassion.

Dear SoapyBubbles

I wanted to say thank you very much for sharing your experiences with us following your cystoscopy, hydrodistention and urethral dilatation at the Western General Hospital. I am pleased to read how all the staff cared for you during the procedures - even managing to make you giggle in the Anaesthetic Room. This must have been an anxious time for you especially as this was the second time that you had undergone this procedure.

I have shared your lovely feedback with the senior staff at the Western and have asked them to pass this onto the theatre team and Laura, the student nurse, who I am sure will all be delighted with your kind words.

I hope you are now feeling better and well on the road to recovery.

Thank you again.

Kind regards

Jeannette
