"The whole experience was very ..."

About: Sussex Orthopaedic NHS Treatment Centre

What I liked

The whole experience was very positive. All the staff were approachable, appreciative of my needs and very professional. My time from arrival to departure on my day for surgery was seven hours. I experienced no unnecessary waiting during that time. I was also very pleased at their willingness to accomodate my dietary needs after surgery as I am lactose intolerant. The pain relief after surgery was good and the pain relief I was discharged with was more than adequate. The physiotherapy advice was also very good. My follow up appointment has also been made for the time frame stipulated on discharge.

What could be improved

The only improvement I can suggest is noting where day surgery patients will be staying the next day when the unit staff call to see how you are. I had to stay with my mother so was not at my home when the call was made. This fact was in my notes as it was a condition of my having the surgery, together with the details of how to contact me there. Failing that, why not phone a mobile number (if available) to ensure contact is made. I was confident with my progress the following day but some people are not and would appreciate the contact from the unit.

Anything else?

I confess to being a little miffed that I am expected to wander around the Sussex countryside for my treatment. I live 10 minutes away from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton which is where I had my first consultation; my treatment was carried out at Haywards Heath and my follow-up is at Lewes!! I feel this is absurd and whilst it maybe convenient for the Trust, it is very inconvenient for the patients.
