"Your website - how are ratings generated?"

About: Basildon University Hospital Patient Opinion Southend Hospital

This is not about a hospital, but about your site. I have been comparing Southend Hospital and Basildon Hospital. According to your comparisons, Basildon appears to be a much better hospital than Southend. However, having read the comments in full on both hospitals, I cannot see how you have arrived at your ratings. I would appreciate knowing how you allocated your star ratings, please.

Also, I am surpirsed that nowhere on your site can I see a suggestion that people wanting to compare hospitals should also refer to the Healthcare Commission's site and information, based on monitored surveys, including patient experiences. Would you not consider this relevant to anyone wanting to make an informed decision on choice of lhospital?

Thanks for your comments. Firstly the ratings: these are generated by patients and carers themselves. So you can just go and rate a hospital or a service and your rating is then added to everyone elses. When you view a rating what you see is the average of everyone elses's scores.

And you're right about ratings from the Healthcare Commission they are really useful. You can find what they are for any hospital by clicking on the link 'Find what official NHS sources say' at the bottom of the Rating Page for the hospital.

The main difference between our ratings and those of the Healthcare Commission are that ours are updated all the time. By contrast the Healthcare Commission's are taken from the twice yearly survey that every hospital has to carry out. So Healthcare Commission data is more valid than ours because it is based on a larger sample. But it is less up to date and the staff often know when the survey is being carried out.
