"First appointment with a new psychiatrist"

About: Shawpark Resource Centre

(as the patient),

I suffer severe mental health & anxiety and has my first appointment with a new psychiatrist. I told them how I struggle daily with my depression & Anxiety, I was crying telling them how I felt.

They said well there is nothing else we can offer to help you here and I'm taking you off the list and you will be referred back to your gp! !

They said how do you feel. I said not good I need support & have seen psychiatrist for years & I suffer suicidal thoughts. They said why haven't you done anything about it & do I still self harm, I said I don't self harm but attempted suicide before and it was good for me to talk to a specialist as I need the support.

They said again well that's all we can do for you and again said how do you feel.

I left feeling helpless and insulted by the way I was getting discarded. They never had my notes and said we just use this room just now.

I feel they had decided to drop me from the service before I even sat down as I have had support from an Ot from shawpark and last visit the Ot said I won't be seeing you again as we don't meet often! !

Some service, I feel like they don't care how you manage or your feelings. I feel so low now and have been left on my own to deal with my depression and anxiety.

Update posted by JamieL (the patient)

The same manager who I spoke to about my complaint about my first appointment with new physiatrist, said they took it from your notes that You could manage your own mental health, and that it's a new system of in & out service now!

I explained I feel I was treated horribly apart from being dropped from service. I went to my gp and got a referral for shawpark again as I do need support, and I also told my story on here as I feel I was treated badly.

At the end of my appointment they said that's it I'm signing you back to your gp and how do you feel about that! I said not good and they said do you feel abandoned! When I feel they basically weren't interested in my well being.

Because I complained to the service manager who also decides on referrals called me yesterday, to say we received your gp referral and the shawpark team feel at this point you can manage your own mental health and if your circumstances change in a couple of months just call me back!.

I am wrighting on here as I suffer severe mental health, suicidal thoughts and anxiety and have been told to manage my own mental health myself! As if you get treated badly at your appointment and you complain, you will never get the help you need and you will just be fobbed off for asking for help.

And it doesn't matter that you get another gp referral as basically I feel the system fails for those who really need it mostly. I know they said it's not uncommon for a physiatrist to say do you feel abandoned! Yes it's not if the physiatrist has seen you more than once and as I only sat down to say how I was doing, I was crying &I feel like they were not interested and said we're signing you back to your gp and then do you feel abandoned at the end as I was leaving!.

Actually if everyone who see's a physiatrist can just manage their own mental health yourself. Then their would be no need in the first place.
