I was admitted to East Surrey for appendisitus on the 16th Feb 2017. In general the care I recieved was very good. The a and e staff and theatre and recovery staff were amazing. The Sister who recovered me gave me full privacy, respect and dignity to which I am most grateful. Mostly the care I recieved on Brockham ward post op was good. However on discharge the nurse that looked after me was constantly sniffing and coughing, which is not something you want post operation. The night nurse was very professional and caring, But was spoken to quite rudely by another visitor who tried to stay the whole night and handled the situation beautifully. I was told I could go home at mid day on the 18th Feb, I asked then for adequate pain relief and a sick certificate to the dr and the nurse. By 5pm when my husband and mum came to collect me. The sick certificate had not been done and I was advised to go to my G.P which is fine but I see it as the hospital responsibility as they did not the operation. They told me that paracetamol and ibrupofen would be adequate pain relief when up until this point I had still been on tramadol and paracetamol and was still in a fair bit of pain. It was only when I made a fuss was I offered some cocodamol. The sick certificate was also arranged a little time later. I asked for replacement dressings and was told I would not need them and I would just be able to take them off when in recovery I was told I had dissolveable stitches which needed to be kept covered. The nurse on Brockham was also unable to tell me when to remove the dressings. No body asked me about my bowel habits after discharge which having had general surgery was quite a major factor. I was also discharged with no laxitives which I should have been when discharged on codiene. In general the care I recieved on Brockham was good but the discharged I feel was a total shambles.
