"Poor care and work ethic on Rehabilitation ward 9"

About: Freeman Hospital

My elderly mother currently receiving rehab on this ward she has difficulty communicating due to lack of English was left sitting in chair legs dangling for long periods of time, staff had not adjusted chair so that her feet touched the ground and when she asked "feet floor" instead of adjusting the chair appropriately instead a pillow was shoved under her feet. On a number of occasions medication is not being given as required in order to keep on top of her sickmess. She is being rushed when being moved and dressed, oral hygiene is none exsistant as since coming onto the ward has not been given the opportunity to brush her teeth. Staff are spending more time gossiping on one occasion whist visiting a member of staff shouted in the corridor stating, "?? Has just gone and mess all over the bed" and then the star laughing and giggling such gossiping and giggling regarding patients has been constant and patient dignity is not priority as they window blinds do not close fully in cubicle and on many occasions the staff do not close the window on the door, they do to prepare before putting patient on the cammode or toilet and then have to leave the room to get appropriate resources for cleaning etc during which time as the doors close very slowly patient is left exposed to any visiting public/cleaning staff etc. especially in the toileting room where although there is a curtain rail above the entrance door but no curtain in place hence leaving patient exposed while on the toilet etc.

Due to language barrier my mum was left distressed on a number of occasions as staff could not understand and struggled to communicate but instead of utilising me (daughter) who speaks English fluently and is the main carerer was told to leave the room form her dignity but then after putting my mum through a distressing situation the star knock on the window and ask me what she is saying this distressful situation could all have been avoided if they had asked from the start! When my mum was being treated on ward 5 care was amazing and I was allowed to stay with her I order to help with translation and care was never told to leave the room on ward 5 staffing and care was 100% and above yet distressingly when moved to rehab on ward 9 care is not as I would expect and although I understand the heavy work load and star shortages etc. That should not be used as an excuse to say why certain care was not give or could not be given cause they have paperwork that needs doing or so any staff are off sick and there having to make do etc. And I do feel the the health of patient has deteriorated undoing all the progress made on previous ward.
