ouch my knee

About: Hospital Of St Cross / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Since October I thought nothing really wrong just a banged knee went to the doctors with they kindly tells me oh just house maid knees barkers cyst well this is still going on on September 12 my doctor sends me for one of those lovely banging scans on my knee but that not all 3 months to wait for the answers which came back as torn ligaments wow how nice I asked about work yea you still can go she said but depends on pain well off I went lovely the pain was to die for I work 9 hours a night none stop the pain was getting worse couldn't knee down push up I felt lost so back to the doctors asking what happens now.

Well its a waiting time to see a consultant how long? 7 month shes tells me. well I cried and everything else packed me off with pain killers and sick note. this is now October wow im so bored cant do much bored come on NHS fix me let me get back to work.

when back again to doctors to see if they can push it no yo just got to wait. this cant be right and now im still waiting and we're now in the new year im fed up no work living on crap, lost everything, feel low, lonely fed up, depression, well more for the doctors to deal with, but cant. they too many on there book taking too many on they cant cope.

back again to doctors morphine lovely I don't need drugs I need it fixing so I can get back to work.  come on, my doctor told me to write to the GMC

So here I am.

so what happens now all I want is for my knee to be fixed, plus other now, because ive been left too long my right knee is naffed too so come on fix me let me get back to work.

Hello me again yes they have brought appointment forward but thanks to pals for helping me but will see how long it's going to be after I've seen a consultant

Lots have happened. We have fallen apart over what's happening. We have no money no life thanks to this I didn't ask for this all I wanted some help but I'm pushed to back of list as I'm not important and now my home life is over. I can't pay bills if I'm not working and what they give you from the government universal credits it's a joke so yes I need my knee doing asap so I can go after all them jobs that I wanted to apply for but couldn't cos I couldn't and still can't do it bend down knee stand walk without pain and life shouldn't be in pain we should have to live on a mixture of pills. That's why we have doctors nurses consultant but I'm left to suffer as I'm not important

I finally went for my appointment at walgrave hospital a lady from pals came with me to be my second ears

Well I wasn't that important after waiting for 7 months or so going though Christmas with hardly any money spending each day in pain no able to do what I did before was work

So ive had to sign on for universal credits which isn't nice makes you feel crap but I go do my thing look for work though I have disk notes that I take monthy to them still not believing I've hurt my knee

They see you walk you can work

My normal job was a care assistant looking after people have done for years but now I can't as I can't do my job I can't give 100%so I'm on sick

So getting back to my appointment I was seen by a nurse not a consultant I was examined asked question and then said oh a operation might not work but we could try steroid injections really I felt sick if that's the case why have it taken so long I used to trust my health care not now I feel fobbed off even going to my doctors they couldn't do anything basically get on with it take this pill etc I'm 51 I don't want to live on pills patches ete I've hurt my back but been told same sorry you gotta live with I don't get it im. Usually fit and healthy but it's the knees that hurt I also suffer with my skin and have a form of psoriasis on souls of my feet that crack bleed etc I've suffered all my life with my skin I've learnt to live with it that's life but my knees so next week I'm going for a injection on my left knee my right I guess I will have to wait another 7 months

After having injection on my left knee. 2 weeks ago at rugby and staff were lovely just like the PALS staff all do a great job

But knee still feels same still can't knee walk etc still hurts I went for job interview but can't take the job as I myself feel that I don't want to let them down due to my knees as right knee is also in pain and I did tell them and they did say speak to doctors

So I've gotta start all over again another 7 months for a injection so a year or so waiting and all I want to go back to work

I’m happy to hear that you were able to get an appointment and that you felt our staff at the Hospital of St Cross and from our PALS team were helpful. However, I was disappointed to read that you are still in pain and have problems with your mobility.

I would recommend that you contact our PALS team if you are still having difficulties and have pain in both your knees. You can reach them on 0800 028 4203 or on feedback@uhcw.nhs.uk

Regarding your previous point about seeing a nurse rather than a consultant – Clinical Nurse Specialists and Extended Scope Practitioners (specialist physiotherapists) receive education and training above standard registered nurses or physiotherapists, and are recognised as experts in the conditions they have specialised in.

This training and experience means that they are qualified and able to provide medical treatments that previously might have been undertaken by a doctor, e.g. prescribing medications, requesting investigations, or in your case, injections to help knee pain, as well as providing advice and support to patients. Having these senior nurses and physiotherapists as part of the team means that patients can be seen sooner, and consultations with doctors can be arranged for discussions around surgery or more serious medical interventions.

I hope this helps. If you do need any more support, I would recommend that you contact the representative from the PALS team who you have been liaising with.
