"When emerging from a shipwreck, you were there for us."

About: High Leys Children's Centre

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have attended this centre since 2008. I still do now.

Throughout the years I have taken my two children (now aged 3 and 9) to various groups, events and creches - groups such as Baby Business, Ones-to-Two's Group and 0-5 Messy Play. I have also been to many events run the this Centre out in the community. Additionally, lots of parties eg, Christmas and Valentines Parties with older children allowed.

I feel that there is not one member of staff that has not gone out of their way to help, from weaning to walking, being creative and curious, Sure Start provides a safe haven for my children to develop and find out who they are, room to grow into themselves, and then to stretch. Each time, you can see them getting more confident in their own surroundings, knowing that they gain more than I could realise, makes the time there valuable, worthwhile, well-spent.

Many members of staff over the wide span of years have been at hand to talk me through worries, concerns or simply share happy moments such as my child getting covered in paint and having a big grin about it!

Of course, Children's Centres are mainly there for the benefit of children but I stongly feel this particular ones has also done so much for me too. I have attending 7 adult learning courses over the years, including parenting classes and English classes. Having my children cared for by highly competent staff helped me to be able to concentrate on something for myself. English is particular helped me get a flair for writing and, although I have dyslexia, I believe by doing this course, it led me to passing the test to get onto a GCSE program. It was the key to me going onto a level 2 and level 3 course (potentially university).

I now have hope that, even though I left school many years ago, that there is chance I can fully support my family in a rewarding job/profession (once I am qualified). The encouragement from Sure Start staff, along the way, has really helped me with confidence and self esteem in going forward.

Having found my way back to Sure Start with my youngest child (now 3) - I am glad I did. From being 3 months old we came and she still loves it now.... you never know when you might need a listening ear or a stable rock to lean on. Who knows? Without the caring staff, the welcoming smile, life could have been different - it could have stayed a dark place! When emerging from a shipwreck, you were there for us. Thank you ALL.

Now I am volunteering there myself, it is wonderful to be part of other families happy journeys.

WOW! What an amazing story which you have kindly shared. It is so great to read about the fantastic experiences your children and you have enjoyed whilst attending activites and events at the children's centre. I think we are very lucky that we have you as a volunteer to share the wonderful journey you have been on and be able to support others on their journey. As you have written we are for children but also parents to provide them with confidence and support to develop their skills. At the children's centre we are aware parenting isnt an easy andso understand that everyone needs support sometimes that why we are here. I am also so very pleased to read that the staff at the centre have always been able to go that extra mile to ensure you all felt welcome and suppport when needed. Thank you for this story and I wish you all the best in your volunteering role and beyond
