"Excellent on going care for lymphoedema"

About: St Johns Hospice

(as the patient),

I went to the Lymphoedema Clinic at St John's Information & Support Centre. I am always greeted with a smile and called by my first name. I have never felt rushed, everything was explained to me and my questions answered honestly. Even the people on the reception are very caring.

Since going to the clinic i have been informed how to care for my legs. First of all by cleaning and by massage. I have been shown how to do exercise and lymph drainage. I have also been on a pilot scheme for the Lymphatic Drainage Pump, which I found very relaxing and my legs felt so much better. I have lost 27 pints of fluid from my legs.

At the moment I am having both of my legs wrapped, this is compression bandaging. It will take down the swelling and reshape my legs. Then I will have to wear elastic stockings. These have zips in them to make them easier to put on. Lymphoedema is not curable, we are shown how to manage it

All of the nurses here are very caring. It is excellent.
