"Wathwood has made me more open minded"

About: Wathwood Hospital

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been here for 11 months. Wathwood has made me more open minded and look at what has gone wrong in my life. I have been able to complete numerous courses, one to one courses with CBT instructors have been the most helpful.

My doctor comes to see me when I need him, in my opinion there should be more hospitals like this. Staff encourage and support patients instead of offering PRN medication, this would be a last resort.

Occasionally I can see favouritism from staff toward patients; I think sometimes there is one rule for one and one rule for another.

I have met a lot of patients who are homophobic; there should be more focus on diversity in Wathwood....

The skills I have taken on in Wathwood I can carry on when I get out…

Dear Glad867.

We really appreciate your posting and I particulary liked your openness regarding things that you have found helpful and the areas where the service can improve.

I am gald that you have found CBT helpfull and I will forward your comments to the team.

Regarding the areas of improvement these need to be brought up with the nurse in charge ward, managers or matrons, as we try and deliver a service that is fair and supporting to to all patients, but we need examples when this is not being fully achieved..

Regarding equailty and diversity we historically had the culture club that gay people and straight allies attended, however recently there has been nobody wishing to attend. Therefore we try and ensure these issues are raised in the patients forums held fortnightly and this is a standing agenda item. However we are also looking at Respect training be delivered throughout the wards to tackle any prejudice and get people talking about equality and diversity issues. I would appreciate some feedback from yourself if this information is getting through to the patients.

Thank you again for your posting.

Phil Service Development Manager.
