What could be improved

I have been attending the hospital (Sheldon Block) for many years, and lost count of the occasions that I have to draw to the attention of staff the notice that requires them, patients and visitors to clean their hands.

There is little point in having a policy on infection control if the simple matter of cleaning hands with the provided wall mounted. Dispensers. On the first floor of that block on an entrance to a treatment ward the dispenser is absent. Staff, patients and visitors just enter. I find it hard to understand who is supposed to be managing this.

The trust welcomes and indeed actively encourages patients and visitors to participate in promotion of handwashing. This is seen as an important part of keeping staff accountability high. The trust is currently engaged in a major handwashing promotion campaign using various methods; posters, managerial leadership, display boards and the actors in the reception. Keeping these messages going and reinventing the approach is recognised as very important; the Trust knows that promotion of handwashing is a long-term aspect of infection control and as staff join and leave the trust, there will always be a need to draw attention to this area.

The trust audits staff practice in clinical areas on a monthly basis, again, to try and promote good practice and identify weaker areas that need to be supported in making improvements. Estates and infection control have looked at provision of handwashing facilities to ensure that we try and optimise these as far as possible. The infection control nurse who leads on the Good Hope site has been made aware of this possible deficit and will investigate the matter further.
