This morning I attended the Neuro Day Care Ward for a lumbar puncture with a little tredipdation.
Several years ago I had a lumbar puncture whilst on holiday in Spain as part of an eventual diagnosis for GBS.
The experience was memorable for all the wrong reasons - three attempts before having to undertake an x-ray guided procedure.
Today I arrived early at the Day Care Centre and made welcome immediately - including the offer and acceptance of a much appreciated cup of coffee before the nurse arrived. When 'my' nurse arrived
I was provided with a very comprehensive explanation of the procedure which resulted in me feeling very confident in both of the staff in attendance.
The environment was pleasant and spotless and there was friendly atmosphere within the department.
After a gentle and apparent unhurried preparation which included provision of a local anaesthetic by a very competent staff nurse I was prepped for the LP itself.
At every stage I was provided with a running commentary and the procedure was completed in a very professional manner.
Whilst there was a little discomfort, perhaps strangely,
I found I was thinking 'what a pleasant experience!'
I guess this was because of the sharp contrast with my previous LP some years ao.
It was good to be shown the equipment and the size of the needles (which are very much smaller than last time).
I was even shown the actual samples of CSF afterwards - all very reassuring.
After the procedure I rested for some time before the staff nurse returned to take numerous samples of blood.
I didn't even feel the needle being inserted for this.
Before I left for my journey home by public transport I was offered, and accepted, fresh sandwiches and another cuppa.
I was provided with a copy of my paperwork and a leaflet on lumbar punctures and reminded of the necessary attention to myself, i.e. lots of fluids, caffeine etc.
To conclude I would like to thank everyone on the ward for making my visit so memorable - for all the right reasons!
Friendly Staff on Floor N included the Nurse Station staff member, the member of staff cleaning the floor in the ward areas, both 'my' nursing staff and the other staff who were visiting other patients in the area.
All very friendly and pleasant.
Thank you so much - Hopefully this post will allay any fears for anyone preparing to attend Neuro Day Care in the future.
