"Gave birth to first baby in April 2016"

About: Princess Royal University Hospital / Maternity

I keep a very bitter recollection of my labor and giving birth at the PRUH. I feel like what should have been the most beautiful moment of my life was taken away from me due to an escalation in the procedures they applied to me. They decided to induce me on the day when the baby was due although studies show that they could have waited a couple of days to see if baby could make his way out by himself. I didn't want to be induced but felt bullied into it. Then came the risk of infection, and the IV of antibiotics. Then a consultant decided that I wouldn't cope with the pain and should have an epidural. Due to a back problem I had in the past, they put me on pethidin; again I felt bullied into it. Once the effect of it had passed, they still gave me an epidural. And finally they had to take the baby out with forceps. It was a escalation of procedures that could have been avoided had they just waited a little for the baby to be ready to come out. I am still traumatised by the experience and will never go back there.

I am saddened to hear that you are still feeling upset about your birth experience with your first baby in 2015.

We work very hard to ensure that every mother has a good experience with us of having their baby which is such an important time.

I know that our Director of Midwidery, Maxine Spencer, would very much like to follow up with you about your experience to see how we can improve things for other women giving birth at the Princess Royal.

If you would like to follow up please contact me direct and I will put you in touch with Maxine Spencer.

I am contactable on jessica.bush@nhs.net or call me on 020 3299 4618. Jessica Bush, Head of Engagement and Patient Experience
