"Out of hours nursing care"

About: Community Services in Grampian

(as a relative),

We have just experienced a very sudden decline of our Mum from Friday to her passing away on Sunday. We were able to nurse her at home allowing her to pass peacefully surrounded by her loved ones with the amazing support of the weekend/out of hours nursing team. From Saturday morning through the night to Sunday afternoon they were there to administer pain relief and comfort. However, the biggest thing was their compassion, empathy and sensitivity. They all introduced themselves as hello my name is... to us and Mum. They all talked to Mum telling her what they were doing and why and importantly to us touched her/held her hand. These may seem like small things but to us as a family were huge. Everyone was fantastic but we must single out Maureen who was our rock. She was with us at the beginning and end and her care was truly exemplary. Again it was the detail of what she said 'would you like me to help you make Mum comfortable'. All on our terms making us feel we were in control. This is true person centred care for both patient and family and we will not forget this kindness.

Dear Grateful3,

Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your Mum and thank you for sharing your story at such a difficult time.

The care that you describe, delivered with compassion, empathy, sensitivity and on your terms is truly person centred care and this is how it should be for all our patients. The community team who supported your mum, and yourselves, over the last few days will be gladdened to hear how the little things really made a difference and that their kindnesses will not be forgotten.

It would be lovely for us if we could share this story with Maureen and I wondered if, when you feel ready, you could contact me on the email address or telephone number below, with further details so that I can forward your kind message to the correct team.

Best wishes,

Kirsten
