"Elderly dementia patient"

About: Princess Royal Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat Princess Royal Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a carer),

Excellent care and attention to mum from the A&E staff - communicative, attentive, empathic, friendly - nothing too much trouble. BIG thumbs up for A&E

Sadly it can't be said of the ward mum was transferred too (ENT ward)

A bare basic rushed hurried intro to the ward, requested a jug of water for mum several times over 2 hours - nothing

Despite them being told that mum has dementia it was met with blank looks.

Requested (may got stroppy and demanded) in the end that mum be moved to a more supervised ward as I wasn't happy or comfortable leaving her there due to the lack of understanding or supervision (I even had to help another patient from the toilet as she was calling for a nurse for nearly 10 minutes)

Called for a nurse to asked mum to the toilet - waited 40 minutes and gave up and done it myself- only to be under-the-breath moaned at her nurse which I found rude! They then refused to talk/acknowledge me after that

Had to request and then chase up food for mum

Have to say the bay she was eventually moved too - the staff were lovely and I felt more comfortable leaving overnight

Asking a staff member is anyone dementia trained/aware - to be told they know what dementia is - NOT the same thing

Noticed incorrect information in her folder (heaven knows where they got it from as they never asked me or mum) that could have been extremely detrimental to her safety and wellbeing

Arrived today to find some doctor (who'd met her for a few minutes) decided that she didn't need her oxygen (which she has been prescribed and using for 15 yrs now) and they didn't realise she needed permanent oxygen

Get that you are busy guys, get that you do a marvellous job most of the time but

a) get at least one staff member trained in dementia

b) actually LISTEN to the family/carer accompanying the patient

c) don't treat that carer/family member like something you have just wiped of your shoe - you may be medically trained but the person with the patient may know a hell of a lot of useful information

absolutely disgusted

Thank you for taking the time to share your kind comments regarding your recent experience you had in A&E. I have shared your email with the department. Such positive praise is always well received and much appreciated.

However I am really concerned about your mother's care on the ward. I have shared your comments with the ward and matron and they are very sorry about the way you were treated and will use you and your mother's experience to improve care.

With kind regards

Caroline Davies

Deputy Chief Nurse
