"Making small adjustments can improve ward dynamics and reduce incidents"

About: Locked & Specialist Rehab / Ashby Ward

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

The ward set up is a key thing that contributes to serious incidents. In the past they used to be on a daily basis but not so much now. It can depend on the patients who are on the ward.

You could get 2 patients in the ward that don't get on, or if all of the patients are in the lounge all day, this could create incidents as patients get on each others nerves.

Having more room time is something that would help with this. I suggested a way of doing it and told the staff that the ward dynamics would change dramatically if patients had more room time.

The staff said they didn't think this would work but that they would try it and they did and it did work. The staff turned round and said it did make a difference and staff and patients noticed that this had made a difference.

Well done you! Thank you for helping us to look at different ways to manage a ward where space is not great. It's very difficult when everyone is together and I guess you all want to do different things. It is the same in every community - where sometimes people just don't get on.

I hope you are looking forward to moving to the new ward, which I have seen. It gives you much more space and I think will be a huge improvement for everyone. I know that the Nurse Manager will ensure you are all involved and regularly informed of the plans

With best wishes Lynn
