"Cancelled operation 5pm the night before"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery

(as a relative),

A family member was due to go in for a operation this morning. Another family member arranged time off work in order to take them to the hospital. They received a call last night at approx 5 pm to say the operation was cancelled because they were too busy and he will receive another date in "due course". I think that this is a disgrace, people get themselves in a state about coming to these places and get themselves psyched up only to be let down at the last hurdle. Surely they would have known way earlier than 5 pm last night and what does "due course" mean?

Dear LJMG

Please accept my sincere apologies for the cancelation of your relative’s surgery I know how distressing this must have been for them and the family.

I am afraid we did not know before 5pm that we would have to cancel the list this was not due to being busy but short notice sickness absence of staff which meant we did not have the staff to proceed with the list.

Please be assured these are not decisions we make lightly and every effort was made to get additional staff but it was too late into the evening by then to secure staff.

If you wish to contact Yvonne Ross, Patient Affairs Manager with your details by calling 01698366558 we will ensure we get in touch with your relative with a new date for surgery.

Once again I am extremely sorry this has happened and the anxiety it has caused please be assured we will do our best to get the surgery performed as quickly as possible.

Best Wishes

Marion

Dear LJMG,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch.

I am sorry that your relatives operation had to be cancelled at short notice, the reason that they were not contacted until 5 pm was that we were trying to come up with a solution so that we did not have to cancel anyone but unfortunately we could not.

If your relative would like to contact Yvonne Ross our patient Affairs manager and give her their details we will get a new date for their operation.

Yvonne can be contacted on 01698 366558

Regards

Pauline
