"Patronising obstetric consultant and errors at..."

About: Hillingdon Hospital / Maternity

I referred to Hillingdon in good faith being new to the area and not wanting to have to commute back into central London for my appointments. I then found out, to my dismay, that all appointments with a doctor take place at the Mount Vernon site which takes just as long to travel to as travelling into central London. The obstetric consultant I met with was exceptionally patronising, rude and insulting. They were entirely unable to provide any kind of answer to straightforward questions about my pregnancy complication; indeed, they gave the distinct impression that they felt I shouldn't be asking any questions of any kind and spoke to me as if I was of below average intelligence. I attended a scan appointment which was carried out by an 'agency' sonographer and a student, neither of whom had the slightest clue what they were doing and spent ten minutes trying to persuade me that a placenta lying directly adjacent to the cervix is not actually considered 'low lying', as well as spreading the gel all over my clothes and not even giving me a helping hand to sit up from the table when I was heavily pregnant.

Furthermore, in spite of my late referral to the hospital, they recorded my third trimester weight as my 'booking weight' which has put me in the 'at risk' BMI category instead of having the intelligence to understand that it is the mother's booking weight at the start of the pregnancy (perfectly healthy in my case) which determines the risk factor, not the mother's weight in the final weeks of pregnancy! This has been brought up by both the midwife and the consultant; the latter who even told me that I had been referred to them because of my BMI when the appointment with them was booked in at the point of referral, before the Hillingdon booking appointment had even taken place, and had nothing to do with weight but with the pregnancy complication I had specified on my referral form!

Needless to say, I am considering referring back to my original hospital as I am more than a little concerned about the standard of care

I am sorry you were disappointed with the care you received and thank you for taking the time to feedback and raise your concerns.

Hillingdon Hospital Foundation Trust covers a wide area and thus provides antenatal care in a variety of settings including Hillingdon Hospital, Mount Vernon Hospital, Ealing Hospital and the community. The appointments are usually offered close to home based on postcode. Midwife appointments are provided in the community, but doctors’ appointments are at the hospital. Some women prefer appointments at Mount Vernon site as it is easier to get to and convenient to park. We are sorry this wasn’t the case for you. However, had you requested a change of appointments, then this could be easily arranged at Hillingdon instead.

I am sorry about your experience with the obstetric consultant. Both the Consultants providing antenatal clinics at Mount Vernon are experienced Consultants and have not had similar complaints before. We follow the CARES (Communication, Attitude, Responsibility, Equity and Safety) values for our Trust and will feedback to the Consultants and sonographers. We have experienced and qualified sonographers who will always supervise any student sonographers.

Even with transfer of care, it is important to record the weight at the first visit in a different hospital. The weight at booking is important, but so is the weight gain during the pregnancy which may influence further management.

We are very sorry that you have felt the need to transfer your care back. We can certainly arrange for you to be seen by a different member of the team should you wish to at Hillingdon hospital, in the hope that we can help you with your ongoing problems and provide you with a better overall experience.

We would like to thank you again for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Sorry for the delay in responding to you.

Regards

Juliette Renaud
