"Dementia in Acute hositals"

About: King's Mill Hospital

(as a carer),

Oh dear what a shambles. My mother has dementia and just recently has had to attend A and E and a number of outpatient appointments (including x-rays and a brain scan) at Kingsmill Hospital. I have been saddened by the lack of dementia training, awareness and help for someone with no capacity. I know its hospital policy to ask the patient their name, date of birth and where they live but when these are questions you don't know the answer to and you know you should know the answer to, you feel humiliated, embarrassed and then angry with the situation. When navigating acute services you can be asked these same questions at least 10 times. Please can something be done to make this a less stressful for the patient and the carer. Perhaps a lanyard system could be adopted alerting staff to a patient and carer who needs more help and a more sensitive approach to asking simple questions. I challenge the Chief Executive of the Hospital Trust to take a patient with severe dementia from the car park though A and E or an outpatient appointment. It's easy to see where the failings are.
