I have just had two procedures in two days under the care of CHUFT and cannot fault the experience. My first minor operation was performed at the Ivy Benson House, Clacton, on 3rd Jan 2017. Admittedly I had to wait a number of months to get this appointment which was frustrating and I did find it difficult to make contact with the department as phone lines were always busy and no voicemail/ call back facility was available. However, when I attended my appointment, expecting only a consultation and then to be placed on a list for the minor surgery, I was shocked (and impressed) to be advised they would be doing the procedure there and then if I wanted! Everyone was warm, welcoming and kept me well informed. A lovely nurse held my hand when I needed it and made sure I was ok before leaving the department (as I felt a bit shaky after). The consultant had a great bedside manner too. Folllow up care and recovery advice was clear and concise. The following day I had an early start at the Elmstead day unit at Colchester general hospital. Arriving at 07.30 for elective knee surgery, I was once again greeted by courteous staff who all introduced themselves by name - embracing the "hello my name is" campaign to make patients feel their care is more personal. I was taken to the ward almost immediately and every part of my admission from that point was swift and efficient. I met everyone involved in my care in person from the nursing team to the anaesthetist and surgeon. Every effort was made to ensure I was clear on what I was having done and to be given the opportunity to ask questions. The anaesthetist really listened when I detailed my history of vomiting after GA and adjusted the drug regime to combat this....thank you!, it worked! Naturally I was nervous at the thought of having a general anaesthetic but this was eased by the very nature of the personal and professional approach of staff to patients. I can honestly say that the experience exceeded my expectations and I would not hesitate recommending both Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust Opthamology and Elmstead day case orthopaedic surgery departments. Thank you to each and every member of staff that cared for me over the two days. I am now at home recovering and plan on not requiring their expertise again in the near future!
