"Great nursing care at my local GP Surgery"

About: General practices in Tayside

(as the patient),

After requiring surgery at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee to remove a pilonidal sinus, I required a lot of daily post-op treatment at my local small GP surgery, done by a couple of lovely nurses (weekday) and at my local infirmary (at weekends and bank holidays. ) This went on a week short of four months! Every single day I had an appointment to remove my dressing, debride the very deep wound (2in deep, 1in wide), assess it and re-dress it accordingly. It wasn't the most pleasant experience of my life having people look at my backside, but I must thank the nurses who all did a wonderful job looking after me every day and patching me up every single time without fault. They were very friendly and helpful but also professional in their jobs too, I cannot fault them. I lost count how many large dressings and Mefix tape I got through in those four months, but finally my wound had healed up enough that I no longer required daily visits to my nurses. Hooray! After the first week of dressing changes, you quickly get over strangers looking closely at your bum and to be fair, if a group of rugby players were in the office at the same time as me, I wouldn't bat an eyelid at them.

I did show my gratitude to my nurses by giving them a box of choccies each as well as a thank you card. I know they were only doing their job, but to put up with me every day....they deserve a medal!

Dear “Karenpff2010”

I was delighted to read your recent Patient Opinion post, acknowledging the wonderful treatment you received as part of your post-op treatment. I note that you have already shown your gratitude to the nurses directly but am unsure if your thanks have been shared with your GP surgery. Should you wish me to take any further action in relation to this, please contact me directly by telephone on 0800 027 5507 (freephone) or by email to feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Kind regards.

Update posted by Karenpff2010 (the patient)

Thank you Alison.

Yes I did write a letter to my surgery (Lour Rd Surgery, Forfar) later on to say thank you and to show my gratitude overall.

I wanted to share my experience to *prove* that what we hear in the news about our 'failing healthcare system' isn't a true reflection of my experience using it at all.

From calling NHS 24 first, then sent to hospital for surgery, to getting dressings changed daily at my local GP surgery by nurses.... all these stages in my treatment has been exceptional and professional, and all the staff I came across worked hard to provide the very best healthcare for me to recover. I can't complain about the level of service I received, I was gratified.

Too many people - including the media - are too quick to criticise the NHS, but where would most of us be without it?

I cannot thank then enough personally.

Thank you for your further comments. I agree we are extremely lucky to have the NHS and it is great for staff to receive acknowledgement for the hard work they do. Thank you you so much for taking the time to share your experience.

Alison
