"Left to nearly pee myself"

About: Kettering General Hospital / Maternity

I gave birth in September 2016 in kgh, I have been thinking about writing this for a while as it has really bothered me the way I was treated. It was my first labour we had rang the ward to say I was really struggling to cope, they told us they were really busy and to try to relax stay at home. Rang 2nd time they said the same thing again. Eventually 2 hours later I was screaming I couldn't cope anymore I was in agony and my partner rang and said that is it I'm bringing her in weather you like it or not. We arrived and it took us a good five minutes to get in as I was collapsing to the floor unable to walk, we got took to a little old side room where I was checked and she said oo your 9CM.. I said I wanted the pool and she said your too late for that.. too late.. I rang up bloody hours ago and you told me I had to stay at home. I am annoyed I dealt with all that pain at home when I wanted the pool, I gave birth in the small room (again annoyed I never got a nice refurbed room) after my birth I told the midwife I was bursting for a wee, she said il go get you a chair to get you to a toilet, 20-30 minutes later she still hasn't returned and I was nearly in tears shouting at my partner I was going to wee myself, I got up and he helped me walk to the toilet then she saw us and said oh hang in you need a pot to pee in. I was took to a nice refurbed room that was all nice and own bathroom and clean so why was I never put into that at the start? I couldn't fault the nurses on the ward upstairs they were lovely. But the actual birth was very traumatic and I was left feeling like I was to much bother to deal with.

I am really very sorry to hear you did not have a positive experience and did not get a chance to use the pool either. Unfortunately not all of our rooms have en-suite facilities. Rooms are allocated to women prior to their arrival and my assumption is the other en-suite rooms would have been in use at that time. We are working really hard to improve our environment and recently all rooms have been re decorated. If you would like to discuss your experience further please do not hesitate to contact me: mara.tonks@kgh.nhs.uk

Kind regards,

Mara Tonks – Lead Midwife
