"After more than 5 hours gave up"

About: Basildon University Hospital / Accident and emergency

Yesterday I went with my dad to see his G.P. The G.P. wasn't happy and suspected my dad's heart failure was worsening. The G.P phoned Basildon Hospital who told the G.P to send my dad to straight to A and E as they were expecting him. After more than 5 hours of waiting, we thought they obviously don't see him as much of an emergency, and left. My dad had hardly had anything to eat all day, it was getting late in the evening, and he had had enough. It would be quicker for the G.P to give a referral to the relevant department than wait at A & E.

Thank you for your comments following your father's attendance at the A&E Department yesterday.

Patients attending on referral from the GP, and if the GP has phoned ahead, are seen under a slightly different process called GP Expected.

Patients do still have to report to the reception desk on arrival and the relevant medics (not A&E medical staff) are contacted to attend.

We are sorry that you left after waiting so long in the department without your father being seen.

It is not possible to look into this further without your father's details, however if you would like to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at pals@btuh.nhs.uk or on 01268 394440, they will investigate this for you.

In the meantime, your feedback has been forwarded to the senior team in the department to share with staff as appropriate.

Thank you once again for your feedback.
