"Mental health crisis care Nottinghamshire"

About: Adult Mental Health Community Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

In October was unwell and phoned the Crisis Team (County). I had seen my CPN that day and she knew I was struggling, she told me to ring the Crisis Team if I became more unwell and ask to be referred to Haven House to keep myself safe. I rang and was told that as they did not have an up to date risk assessment that they couldn't do this. They offered no further support or advice. Later that night I went to A and E at QMC. I was hearing voices and they told me not to speak to anyone. I handed a hand written note at the check in desk explaining this and was told to wait for triage.

It was very busy in A and E and I became more unwell, taped my mouth closed with some tape I found lying around, banged my head against the wall, hid behind the vending machine for a period of time and wandered around the department. After several hours I had not been triaged. I wrote a note again and gave it to a nurse. I was triaged and taken to a cubicle where their was a security guard. There was no bed so I lay down on the floor. A nurse came in and called me 'Christine'. This is not my name. She searched my bag then gave it back to me. Another nurse later on also called me Christine. No one asked if I had harmed myself.

Still unable to speak I was moved to an interview room with the male security guard to wait for the Duty Psych to see me. After more hours and having had no medical care, I left the department. The Police rang and asked if I was ok. I just said "mmmm" and put the phone down.

The next morning my CPN arranged for me to go to Haven House. The first night I was there I awoke with a nightmare and came downstairs to find a member of staff that should be awake, asleep. The second night I woke up very distressed and the same worker was asleep again. They woke up and said -Oh its you-and promptly went back to sleep whilst I sobbed under the dining table. The next morning the staff had erected a message board in the lounge. I wrote on there exactly what had happened the night before. Some of the staff read it but not single one talked to me about it.

I do not find this kind of crisis care in any way acceptable and it has taken until now for me to get the courage up to complain. I welcome your comments.

I’m very sorry to hear of your experience in our Emergency Department and of the Crisis Service generally. Although I can’t comment on your experiences at Haven House (as this is not a service provided or run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust), I think it might be useful for us to talk directly about your time in our Emergency Department so I can look into your case. If you would like to, you can contact me directly on 0115 9249924 ext. 70181 or you can email me on jane.newton@nuh.nhs.uk.

Kind regards,

Jane Newton.

Matron, Emergency Department.

Dear Sadlady

Thank you for sharing your experience on patient opinion, all feedback is welcome.

It sounds like your Crisis pathway was hindered by the delay of a risk assessment for Haven House, the risk assessment should have been available in a more timely manner as this would have caused you less distress and probably prevented you from attending the Emergency Department. I am sorry you to hear you had such a negative experience there, I will ensure I feed this back to my colleagues at QMC. The Emergency Department is not the best environment for patients experiencing mental health distress, however all patients should be treated with dignity and respect.

I am concerened about your treatment during your stay at Haven House and I would really like to talk to you in more detail about this, as this will assist me greatly with my concerns and how I investigate this, I do hope you feel able to talk to me?

Once again thank you for being open about your experience

Kind regards

Dear Sadlady

Thank you for getting in touch with me today, it was lovely to chat but more importantantly to talk about your experience at Haven House, I am aware from our conversation that it took at lot of courage for you to contact me, but I'm really pleased you did.

You asked if it would be alright to meet up with me and may be another one of your friends who has also had some similar issues concerning Haven House. In the meantime I have asked if you would write down any questions you feel are important in preparation for our meeting as a means of trying to resolve your concerns. I will get back in touch with you today with some dates to meet up. I'm looking forward to meeting you both.

Thanks again for getting in touch

Kind regards

Ruth

Update posted by Sadlady (the patient)

Thanks for arranging to meet with me Ruth. I have tried to ring Jane, but the extension number she gave in her reply is incorrect and the switchboard can't locate her.
