I was treated well and kindly by all staff except for the person who did my endoscopy. They seemed oblivious to my anxiety and did not even speak to me on equal terms, preferring to stand over me or occasionally sit on the edge of the trolley in the cubicle with little or no eye contact and lacking empathy. I was concerned about a slightly loose tooth and had been told by another staff member that I might lose it, due to having to "bite down on a mouth guard". The nurse told me it had happened before. Their final comment was to advise me that if I started to fight with staff and become unmanageable, my procedure would be abandoned. They did suggest that this happened in people who would not normally react in this way, but by that time I felt even more fearful of how the sedation was going to affect me.
Despite following pre procedural instructions to the letter, my scope was abandoned due to my stomach containing too much food. Nobody told me that this was a common occurrence and the member of staff did not offer any reassurance or even speak to me again. Experienced staff forgetting the basics.
I left the unit feeling that I had been a waste of everyone's time and will probably decline my next appointment offer.
