"Five hour wait to be taken home"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Care of the Elderly (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

My elderly mother was admitted to A&E on with a UTI and discharged a few days later.

She was left in the patient discharge lounge for four hours sitting in a hospital gown awaiting PTS to bring her home. We called in the morning when we were told that if we wished we could bring down clean clothes. They said she would be home shortly so we did not do this in case we missed PTS at home.

Mum arrived home at 5pm after a five our wait. She was frozen and soaked with urine including her slippers. No one had changed her and just left her in this condition.

Since then she has had considerable pain and  had to be re-admitted to A&E with sepsis and a kidney Infection. We feel this was all brought about by her treatment in the discharge department.

Dear goodhealth,

I am really sorry to hear your mum has been readmitted and disappointed to read about the care she received as she waited on transport home. I would like the opportunity to discuss this further with you, as I believe we can learn from your feedback.

My contact details are 01698 366002.

Kind Regards,

Gillian

Dear goodhealth,

Thank you very much for getting in touch, it was really helpful to discuss your mums care and experience today. As agreed on our call, I have initiated a monitoring tool for patients who are in the discharge lounge, to ensure that standards of care are maintained throughout the entire patient journey.

Our Senior Nursing team will review and ensure compliance with the tool.

Once again, I am so sorry that our failings caused your mum and your family distress and I do hope that she is feeling better over the festive season.

Good Wishes to you all

Gillian
