"My Broken Leg & Northern General Hospital"

About: Northern General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

(as the patient),

I had the misfortune of falling and breaking my leg in 2 places and dislocating my ankle on October 15. The ambulance arrived and the 2 ambulance men were wonderful, putting me at my ease as I was in a lot of pain and discomfort. My arrival at A&E Minor Injuries, was just as good, the staff were efficient, and kept me informed of what was going to happen. I went to X ray, again I was advised of the process and what would be happening. After being potted by the lovely ladies in the "potting shed", I was sent home, with an appointment for the following morning at fracture clinic. The only thing I found not up to standard was that I was left to my own devices to find my way home, without being asked if I had any transport available to me. As I had just had my leg plastered, mobility was extremely hampered.

The following morning at fracture clinic, the registrar took one look at my x rays and noticed I had a badly dislocated ankle. He was perturbed that this had not been picked up by the Dr in A&E. He advised I would need surgery and was admitted to the ward.

I had the very great pleasure of being on Huntsman 6. The staff were fantastic. Very caring to all patients whilst being very overstretched and busy. The ward was very clean and constantly cleaned whilst I was there. I can honestly say not only myself but other patients in my bay were all treated with dignity and respect.

On my discharge, a nurse booked me an ambulance for my return visit to clinic, but unfortunately didn't reserve a front seat in the medicar so when that arrived it had to leave without me as the front seat was already booked out. This then left me with nearly £30.00 out of pocket expense having to get taxis to and from the NGH for my appointment.

My clinic appointment was as efficient as before, and I have no complaints regarding this. All the staff are so friendly and helpful.

I am still currently an outpatient waiting for another follow up appointment, but all in all I would state I have a very positive outlook regarding my care so far.
