"A recent inpatient episode"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / Urology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary, Oxford Road, Manchester for a urology procedure.  removal of a Nephrostomy tube and insertion of a JJ stent as well as balloon dilatation to my right ureter.

After waking up from surgery at 3. 30pm I was informed by a doctor in recovery that the procedure hadn't worked.

I was sent to my ward (ETC Short Stay Ward) at 4. 30pm. After being on the ward for around an hour and drinking a mug of tea, a cup of orange juice and half a jug of water, I noticed that no liquid had drained into my urostomy bag and I had a dull ache in my right kidney. I called for the Nurse who said she would page the doctor and get me some pain relief. She promptly came back with some pain relief and said the doctor would be with me ASAP.

About 30 minutes later when the doctor arrived, my pain had increased vastly and I was curled up in a ball on the bed. The Registrar told me that there was a blockage in my nephrostomy but would arrange to have it flushed right away. The doctor then went to the Nurse on the ward and told her to bleep the junior on call Doctor as they were tired and was going home.

I had to call for the Nurses on numerous occasions after this as the pain had become intolerable. They kept informing me that the doctor was on his way.

The doctor finally arrived at 8. 30pm (5 hours after waking up in recovery) and told me he didn't need to flush my Nephrostomy as it had been a faulty bag which had stopped it draining. I thought this didn't sound right as the Nephrostomy tube drips constantly and I know this as this has been insitu since September 2016. The doctor then was overheard by my husband, who was there, telling the staff nurse that the reason for this was not the bag but rather a cap, to stop the tube dripping, had been put on in theatre and they had forgotten to remove it.

As soon as he had taken the cap off and changed the bag my pain subsided within seconds and I was totally pain free within a minute.

The following morning when my doctor came to see me I told him what had happened and he apologised to me and said he had placed the cap on but had asked the theatre team to remove it before putting a bag on and waking me up but they must have forgotten to do so.

I understand that mistakes happen but my concerns here are:

1. Why was the cap left on in theatre after the Surgeon had asked for it to be removed.

2. I was left for over 4 hours in agony

3. The doctor on the ward could have prevented this 3 hours earlier with a very quick check on my Nephrostomy.

4. Why was I lied to about the cause of my pain by the junior doctor.

I would appreciate a speedy response to this as I felt I had to endure a lot of pain which could have been easily avoided.

Thank you
