I had my first child here when they moved into the new building and new ward in march 2012. I arrived when I was in the latter stages of labour to the 6th floor but was simply told to wait until they were ready. There was no one about. I was then sent to a room and ten mins later they came to check on me to find that I was fully dilated and ready to push/deliver. They rushed me to a delievery suite and I had very supportive professional staff and student midwife who worked me through my delivery. However after this point I had to wait almost 1.5hoirs for a porter and decided it would be best to walk seeing as I would not be able to sit down anyway. Seats need to be suitable for post birth and it is pretty clear woman are unable to sit properly so suitable seating needs to be provided. I had an amenity room booked and the midwife who came to see me was simply asked if they would be coming to check on the baby and they replied " your baby your responsibility". I was horrified thinking I just wanted to know if you would keep coming n going through the night. I went home the next day without. Win checked and had to return a few days later as stictches had come undone and were infected!
Fast forward tbreee years I come back to have my second child and I am told as I am GBS positive I will need to immediately have antibiotics to protect the baby when I go into labour (including waters breaking) so I rush to the hospital only to be ignored by staff despite a big yellow sticker being placed on top of my file to highlight the urgency of the antibiotics by another midwife at the same hospital. I am told to wait like the other woman in the corridor.
All of whom are experiencing contractions to some level with no privacy or dignity. I decide that I should go to the toilet to get some privacy and I remain there for as long as I can. I then return to the desk to the same midwife who tells me to carry on waiting to which I responded I will be in the toilet (through severe contractions). My husband realaoss that I am having very strong contractions close together and tells the staff to see to me immediately. They rush to the toilet and wheel me out to a room and I later gave birth to my son in there who needed to go icu immediately after being born due to difficulty breathing! Why are we told to go to the hospital for antibiotics if our needs will not be met? Why are some staff so desensitised? I had a very bad third degree tear and further complications which remain with me.
I wonder if I had not been ignored or had more experienced staff if it all could have been avoided? Not allstaff are like tbis and it feels like they are or were u see staffed and resourced. Or the fancy big building just does not have enough room to accommodate demSadly I'm not in a position to go private and cough up 5-15k to avoid carelessness! So I'm going back to have my third child here simply for convenience. I do worry if they will ignore me again and things will be worse.
"Two births here due to convenience (location)"
