"I was very relieved to get moved"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I have an inflammatory bowel condition and have lived with it for 11 years. I know my body and the disease well, and I know what is and isn't normal. I've been in and out of hospital several times this year with worsening symptoms and no one can get to the bottom of it. Yesterday, the nurse specialist told me to go to A&E to get admitted as she wasn't happy with my condition. I did as I was told. The staff who I was greeted with in ERU told me that it's not been long since I was last there, in an accusatory way. I explained my symptoms had been getting worse and I was running to the loo with diarrhea about 20 times a day. They suggested that's just my condition.  It's not though. It's not normal. They then asked, if I have tried Imodium?  Like it's a case of the runs. And told me I'd probably be getting sent home anyway. I have been admitted to Monklands several times and never have I come across a member of staff so dismissive. I am young and would not choose to be here. The staff's tone and manner was horrible and I was really upset. As a patient, I don't cause any problems and I felt this was completely unjustified. I was very relieved to get moved. Hospital is a scary place and the be treated like like when you're alone and in pain and it's the middle of the night is inexcusable.

Dear Crohnie87

I am sorry that you are having such a terrible time with your inflammatory bowel disease and you have had to spend so much time in hospital. I'm sure this has been a very stressful time for you.

I am very disappointed to learn of your experience in ERU and apologise for the upset caused; you are absolutely correct patients know their own conditions so well and when it is not 'normal' for them.

It's important we learn from your experience and I would appreciate you contacting Melanie MacLean, Patient Affairs Manager on 01236 713065.

I do hope your conditon settles down and you are feeling better soon.

Kind regards

Ruth
