I was brought in by ambulance after experiencing breathing difficulties and was sat on a chair after being booked in by the paramedics. I spent the next two hours watching others sat in the same row of chairs, having blood pressure and temperature taken, questioned about their complaints and ultimately moved on, this included two teenage girls who were in and out having cigarette breaks and a drunk who could not sit up. At no point during this time was I spoken to or even eye contact made. My breathing was getting worse and out of desperation I asked a nurse if they would take my blood pressure. The nurse made it clear in their manner that I was a nuisance and at that point I had had enough. My husband had been waiting all this time and I felt my only option at this point was to try and seek help elsewhere. I went to find my husband and for the first time I was spoken to by the staff who convinced me to return. I was then put on oxygen and nebulisers. I was seen by a nurse practitioner who gave me a capsule of antibiotic and I was admitted on to acute ward. During the night I deteriorated and was started on i.v. antibiotics after a nurse called a doctor to examine me. I remained in hospital for nine days. I cannot help thinking that had any of the staff bothered to speak to me they would have seen how ill I was and I would have been reassured instead of wondering if they knew I was even there at all.
