"Calm and collected under pressure"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / General surgery

Had cancer surgery 24/11/16 under local anaesthetic , second to last operation of the day, so recovery room was so busy my trolley was turned away with some banter about there being no room at the inn. Was wheeled back into theatre while the team did a handover and got ready for the next op. Then wheeled into a slot in a different recovery ward for another 20 mins while they waited for the OK to be taken down to Channel Day and wait for discharge. It was clear there had been quite a log jam of post op trolleys not able to get where they would normally go, but throughout this hold-up all the staff around me remained completely calm and showed no signs of irritation or annoyance, which anyone in another workplace situation could all too easily have given way to. Instead I felt that my comfort was the priority and I was shown every kindness. That counts for such a lot and the staff are doing an amazing job under very trying circumstances.

Thank you for letting us know about this - and so soon after your operation.

While it is certainly not ideal that there was such a log-jam, it was good to know that the teams had a strategy for keeping you safe and comfortable at all time - and their calmness must have been reassuring to you. I hope that you are recovering well from your surgery.
