My 78 year old mother was admitted onto gate12 as she suffers from heart failure and kidney failure she is taking a trial drug for her heart failure which pinderfields prescribed during a hospital stay 9 weeks earlier.
When we visited her on day 2 of her stay her room door was closed and we were told she had the doctors in with her and could we wait outside! Being the polite people we are my sister and I waited and eventually four doctors left her room and we went inside. She was very distraught and cry I'll struggling to breath and through the tears she managed to tell us that she had not had her heart medication as the Doctors had just been into tell her that the Doctor who had seen her the day before had only written 5 of her medications down instead of the 13 she takes but not only that the hospital didn't have her heart drug anyway. She explained that during the night she had had an angina attack and after using her call button it had taken 20 minutes for someone to come during which time she had vomited on the floor and was desperate for the toilet when the nurse did arrive they scolded mum for being sick on the floor and said they would fetch a commode which took another 10 minutes. One of the doctors passed the room about this time and I asked them to explain to us what they had said to mum which they did in an extremely patronising way, they also went into great detail as to how this trial drug may be a placebo and that she may not need it anyway however they asked that we fetch the drug from home so that she could have it as the hospital didn't have it and they said the doctor in question who messed up the medication would be spoken to.
because of mums kidney failure she has to monitor what she drinks and her urine is measured the hospital had asked her to urinate into the cardboard bowls and the staff would collect them this they did and obviously had emptied the bowls into a measure the dirty bowls had been piled on top of the bin in the room and on day 2 there were 4 dirty bowls in the room. There was also no hand sanitiser in the room.
Mum also has sores on her legs which the district nurse dressers at home every other day we asked a further doctor who visited her that day if theses could be changed as they were weeping and they said the legs weren't a concern it didn't matter if the dressings were changed that day or next week! After asking at the nurses station for dressings three times that day we brought dressings in from home so we could do them ourselves. We fear for mums health and her safety and as a family we are spending most of the day and evening with her in order to protect her from the poor care and humility she is enduring the only good thing about this ward is the open visiting hours.
