"Care of my elderly mum"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Bones, joint and fractures Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Renal Dialysis

(as a relative),

My Mum had half hip replacement at ward 10 D QEUH Glasgow. Mum had been in hospital from July to November this year, with multiple issues, this was all in renal ward they went the extra mile even medically when they are kidney specialists!

She arrived ward 10 D, yes it was a different pace! Few had time for you! My mum had good surgeon and care of elderly nurse and Dr. The Drs were great, kind, listened, gentle and got her medicine that covered her pain. A few of the nurses mostly auxiliary were lovely the rest diabolical and short in their manner, can't look at you raised voices shouting over you as can't be bothered connecting.

I slept with my mother on chairs for over a week. I'm glad I did, because even me being with her ringing her buzzer, speaking up for her as she has a stutter when ill or nervous did it make much difference?   "We'll be back in a minute" pain relief wasn't a skill they possessed as my mum suffered greatly! How would I know, we are home and mum is in her local hospital to be at peace and stress free! With sufficient pain relief !

Mum was released and cried the whole way home in an ambulance of nearly four hours!  She arrived crying at her local hospital. Physio yes I understand it's good for chests and clots! ! But last day being there mum was sat up from 9am to 1pm, hanging off the large chair in exhaustion she couldn't hold her body up and her legs swollen and feet a real mess, ... once in bed looking like a corpse!  Physio came looking for her, after 2pm, I usually had a rest then and left mum for an hour but something told me to wait, hadn't I been there physio would have put her on hoist and got her working her legs to strengthen them!

I say crying in disbelief that someone couldn't see this human being and how many more acts that feel cruel do they do daily! I said no the young assistant replied back to her boss!   I heard him outside door saying that's the best time to get them up when their in pain!

I have taken photos of mum at the prime time they hunted her down... I feel that acts like theirs could kill someone a day after being in hospital this long, mums lucky to be alive not from what she fought.   She is strong and her families love has kept her here. The neglect I feel has left her like an old woman of 99!  I believe some of these staff members should be in the army with their attitudes and manners! The ward was v short in beds, hence shipping mum off! A member of staff kept turning mum one day when mum was in great pain saying her new hip was excruciating no meds were given just told by staff member that it's a position turn she needed! !  I asked for the doctor who gave her something to settle her!

I was ready to post the pictures of my mum because I think they talk for themselves about the mindset of the individuals who were caring for her!

We may be individual but our experience was very real I feel traumatised myself, I was sober, eat clean and love my mother and other humans dearly I know how I treat others and know the difference of right and wrong!

I asked when mum was crying out in pain one night to a staff nurse what meds had she just been given, in an angry short voice I was told slow release.  I asked how long will that take to kick in she got angrier and said it's slow release.  her face drew closer to me and her eyes got wider! I had no one to tell I was being strong for my mum! ! Plus on her night shift we never saw her it was the auxiliary s that came in and gave mum her medicine and turned her! We were a bother, some times asking for more pain relief which mum did do lots, they didn't come back she was left lying!

Shocked isn't the word... they fought with you if you asked questions or queried them!

I am power of attorney for mum thank lord and only in the last day when I was very concerned for her and physio wanting her out bed for I say a big No! Through masses of grief and tears.

I pray we have never to return.

I watch these nurses, renal ward was busy in fact one nurse saved my mothers life working with her ALL night, no moans! Sweat yes! But no attitude.

Sorry to be so blunt it's been an eye opening year.

Mums last words while crying in all over pain said what's wrong with me why can't they help me, I think they can't, she said I'm in wrong bit of hospital.

Our older generation are wise they see hear and know what and who they are looking at and if had energy to talk might clear these non starters .

Dear 'Detox chick'

I'm one of the NHS GGC Medicine for the Elderly consultants, but not directly involved in this service.

Your story is very distressing, and I'm disappointed you haven't had a formal response from us yet.

I will send some internal emails to see if I can bring this to the attention of the right people in ward 10D QEUH.

Thank you for the positive comments about the renal unit.

I'm sorry I can't help more at this stage, but you deserve a response from QEUH.

Ian

Dear 'Detox Chick'

I've seen some emails from other staff who are now aware of your story, and are planning a response.

This has been slower than usual because of the holiday period, but your story has been read by the relevant people and I hope you will hear from them soon.

Dear Mr Reeves

Your support has been very much appreciated by myself and my family.

Caring is very exhausting and takes up most of my energy.

To be treated in certain ways by those who ((choose)) their vacation is not on in this day and age.

To watch someone we love hurt, and to be treated with less respect than some animals are treated, in this day and age is beyond comprehension.

I am well aware of staff shortages, etc, etc I saw plenty in our stay, but if we keep saying, it's ok then where do our loved ones come into the equation.

NHS care is paid for, our elderly have well and truly paid their way in this lifetime. Sadly I watch how they are treated and spoken to I hear them cry from within when they are not seen or heard.

I appreciate your reply very much.

I speak up because I know good loving, care exists as we received it for at least eight weeks in the renal ward!!!!

A young man by the name of Kevin and his team were first class!!!!! He saw mum, heard her and was a huge comfort as were others.

Mum had organ failure and these people were positive in a time we could have given up. They also accommodated her and myself when her kidneys returned on their own to working order.

However, there was some care that I saw that I think was unacceptable and will haunt me ... as long as I live I'll never forget what I saw traumatic!

We are dealing with fellow human beings here yes boxes need ticked! But there are humans beneath the chore in hand;( sadly some folks eyes do not lift from their learned criteria to view with their heart or common sense.

Thank you for hearing this I pray some others don't have to face this raw treatment. I'm glad I could be with my mum, god alone knows what treatment would have been if I hadn't been there.

Staff seem so defensive when asked simple questions about medication too, to be shouted back at, is not on, one staff member raised their voice when I asked what medication had been administered.

What has been done is done, but I'd dread to ever face that ward or those people again.

Not all were same but majority.

Kind regards

Detox chick

Dear Detox Chick

Thank you for taking the time to post on patient opinion and please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your post.

I am sorry to read about both your mother’s experience and your experience in Ward 10D. All our patients and visitors should be treated with dignity and respect and this is not what you describe here.

I will share your comments with the General Manager and ask that they come back here with a reply to the issues you have raised.

Please accept my apologies.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Hello 'Detox Chick'

______________________________

Dr Geddes

Thanks very much for the feedback. We value patient and carer feedback to try to improve patient care in the renal unit. We know that communication is important and your comments emphasise this. I will share your story with Kevin and the other nurses in the renal unit.

Dr Colin Geddes - Lead Nephrologist, Renal Unit, QEUH.

Dr Reeves

Many thanks for taking the time to post your experience as a powerful story on Patient Opinion. Your Mum's care in the renal ward reminds us in @NHSGGC of how the care we provide can make such a difference when it is good. It is very helpful and rewarding to know what is being done well, particularly when circumstances are difficult, as they were for your Mum.

Dr Ian Reeves - Consultant Geriatrician QEUH.

I would like to Thank Dr Colin Geddes, and also Dr Ian Reeves. Both your replies softened a very open hurtful wound.

To be heard and seen in normal days is vital, but in traumatic times even more do.

Still no reply from ward 10, so much so, they disgusted me then and do so now.
