"Concern about suitability for Colonoscopy"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Endoscopy

(as a relative),

My husband attended Wishaw General Hospital as a follow up to a positive bowel screening result.

As his cardiac health was very concerning and unstable at this time we expressed some concerns to the Consultant at that time.

Our feelings were that he was not listening and didn't communicate appropriately to our fears.

To relieve our concerns we contacted my husbands Cardiologist, our GP and sent an explanatory letter to the consultant Mr Downey.

I can only say at this point how helpful we found Mr Downey. He took the time to explain his treatment options and also to apologise if he had cause any offence at the previous meeting, he had no intentions of upsetting us.

My husband has since received excellent communication from the department and staff and received a clean bill of ( abdominal health)

We would like to give our heartfelt thanks for the mannerly and professional way Mr Downey dealt with our concerns as we are so aware what a massive caseload consultants have to deal with.

Dear moonie,

I was sorry to learn that you and your husband didn’t feel listened to at what must have been a very anxious time for you both.

It is really important that our patients and their families are provided with clear information and that they are also involved in decision making about their care and treatment. I’m delighted that Mr Downey was able to do this with you and meet your needs, it will be my pleasure to share your feedback with him.

I’m pleased that your husband has received a “clean bill of abdominal health” following further investigation and I would urge anyone reading this who receives a bowel screening kit to participate in this important screening programme.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience through Patient Opinion.

Best wishes
