On arrival at RGH we waited only a short time when the nightmare began. The nurse came to do 'a few checks' on arrival at the sight test point.
We informed the nurse that my wife is totally blind, yet she insisted on trying hand waving and lights including in my wife's prosthetic eye. This continued despite repeatedly saying my wife is totally blind and can see nothing.
The Consultant (and I use this title advisedly) was an absolute nightmare, they constantly failed to inform my wife what they were doing and what they wanted her to do, including the eye exam table being shoved in front of my wife and expecting her to know it was there.
They examined both eyes and proceeded to put drops in both eyes without telling my wife what they were doing. We informed them the right eye was a prosthetic at which point they asked what happened to it, when asked they stated that they were cleaning the eyes and putting antibiotics in as well. They said they would see my wife in 8 months.
At this point I asked if they thought they should actually examine my wife's left eye, they said they had, we then said the eye was covered by a painted lens that completely hides the eye, it took a couple of repeats of this before they decided to do so and asked her to take the lens out and performed a very quick check of it without taking time to fully examine the eye. They appeared unaware of my wife's Retinoblastoma and extremely vague in their manner.
Eventually they agreed to follow up in a years time, at which time we left them and made straight to the nurses to complain, they suggested they would have a word with the doctor after clinic.
