One evening I arrived home from work to find my father complaining of severe pain in his chest. I called the paramedics, who felt that my father would be better going to A & E. We spent several hours in A & E. During that time I informed the medical staff that my father's family had a history of blood clotting problems - noting that his late mother had had phlebitis, and that his son (my brother) had been treated earlier in the year for 5 blood clots on his lungs. The staff eventually decided that they could do nothing for my father and sent us home.
At approximately 11. 30pm the following day, I heard my father cry out in pain - he was in another room to me. I discovered him on the bathroom floor, with a cut to his head (sustained when he fell). I called an ambulance, which came straight away, but it was too late - he died, in hospital. The post mortem found that the cause of death was a pulmonary thrombo-embolism - a blood clot on his lung. I can't say for certain, but I believe that if I had been listened to the previous evening, that the medical staff would have checked for/treated my father for a possible blood clot, and that my father might still be alive today.
